Route 1: Ponte da Piedade (Lagos)
Arguably one of the most popular (and busiest) places for paddle boarding in the Algarve. Here you will find a mix of beautiful beaches, sea caves and unusual rock formations; enough to keep you busy for 4-6 hours, depending on how much time you have.
Route 2: Ria do Alvor (Lagos/Alvor)
Towards the end of Meir Praia beach you will find the Ria do Alvor – a large river estuary popular with nature lovers and kite boarders alike. Here you will find peace and tranquility away from the crowds. There are many places to start your tour and its best to visit on a low-mid incoming tide. Paddle boarding in the Ria do Alvor could take you anywhere between 2-8hrs depending on how far you want to go.
Route 3: Barragem da Bravura (Bensafrim)
On days when the wind is greater than 10-12 knots, the lake tour is one of the few safe options for paddle boarding near Lagos. The water is warm and there are plenty of private inlets to stop for swimming and picnicking. It’s also a fabulous spot for paddle boarding on a full moon when you can enjoy the peace and serenity of the lake and being surrounded by nature.
Route 4: Benagil Caves (Lagoa)
The most famous naturally formed sea cave in the Algarve. The Benagil cave is a 40 minute drive from the centre of Lagos. This is where inflatable iSUP boards come in handy; you simply roll them up and put them in the back of your car. After seeing the Benagil cave and paddle boarding further along the coast, you will also get to see the the “Arco Natural” near Praia da Marinha. The Benagil paddle board tour is more or less a day trip from Lagos, so make an early start and beat the crowds.
Route 5: Praia da Ingrina (Vila do Bispo)
A little off the beaten track, the trip westwards from Praia da Ingrina offers some great paddle boarding opportunities. Here you will find a rocky coastline, with small beaches, tidal sea caves and some great places to cliff jump. Praia da Ingrina is 35 minute drive from the centre of Lagos, so give yourself 4-6 hours including travel time for this trip. And, due to the relative isolation of the area, we recommend this tour for more experienced paddle boarders only.
Route 6: Praia da Amoeira (Aljezur)
A little off the beaten track, the trip westwards from Praia da Ingrina offers some great paddle boarding opportunities. Here you will find a rocky coastline, with small beaches, tidal sea caves and some great places to cliff jump. Praia da Ingrina is 35 minute drive from the centre of Lagos, so give yourself 4-6 hours including travel time for this trip. And, due to the relative isolation of the area, we recommend this tour for more experienced paddle boarders only.
